My son, who I’ll call Giggles, decided not to take a nap yesterday. Eventually, he stopped recounting the reasons for this sleeping strike to his beloved bedtime companion, M. Mouse, and started crying. I waited what I/the pediatrician deemed an appropriate amount of time and went to see what the fuss was about. “Stuck!” “Stuck!” “Stuck!” I heard as soon as I opened the door.

Malfunction Junction
What I saw was this: Giggles, who constantly tries to remove his clothing and diaper during naptime — a battle I fight with duct tape strategically placed over zippers, snaps, and flaps — had managed to get both legs stuck in one side of his footed pajamas. He was stuck, and he was mad. I laughed. He did not. (I think M. Mouse was secretly laughing, too.) I righted the wardrobe malfunction, murmured some encouraging words like “sleepy time,” closed the door quietly, and hoped for the best. No nap that day. But at least the duct tape stayed in place. Stuck!
