“To dig deep into the actual and get something out of that — this doubtless is the right way to live.” — Henry James

How do your children enjoy the outdoors in fall and winter? How do you? And what is it about dirt?

  1. That photo of Bun is beyond gorgeous. They are all great shots. I wish I could take better pictures! I think improving my photography is going to be part of 2011.

We spend a lot of time in the outdoors at our place – mainly because we are lucky enough to live right by a bush reserve. In Autumn and Winter getting rugged up and out and about is good for the soul. x

  2. I love that photo of Bun! He looks so out of place in his Bumbo in the wildnerness. Brilliant.

  3. Children’s fascination with dirt might be a primitive connection to mankind’s traditional relationship with the land and survival.

Then again, it might just be that children know when they’re wearing a clean pair of pants, and children can’t stand a clean pair of pants.

    Cool pics.

  4. Love the quotes you come up with. You must have a great book, no? (And by the way, are you going to come over to The Maladjusted Book Club? We’re doing Madame Bovary in December. Whatdaya say?)

  5. OK, I LOVE that first picture! A little splash of baby color in a somber fall portrait…awesome.

My kids have always loved dirt, and I have eventually gotten over my phobia of dirty hands when we are outside playing. Now I even like getting my hands in the dirt, especially when gardening. Enjoy these last days of being able to even have bare hands outside!

  6. LOL. I LOVE that picture of Bun in the middle of the woods. No digging and excavating over here. It’s just too cold (especially for me, the gal from the tropics) to be outside! Glad your kids are enjoying it though.

  7. Love the first pic. Absolutely precious. My daughter loves playing with the dirt and holds tea parties in the backyard. She always welcomes people from near and far (all imaginary of course).

  8. I think if we all let go, digging in the dirt is intrinsically fun. It’s where we came from and it allows your creativity to go wild. Kids haven’t learned to stifle that impulse yet.

  9. Hahaha! I love the baby in the Bumbo in the middle of “nowhere” picture.

  10. I love that first one…so darn cute!! The others are great too :).

  11. My babes aren’t old enough yet to actually enjoy the outdoors, though Emily does derive pleasure from swings. : )

  12. Lots of digging in the warm sun over here. But at least we can throw ourselves into the wading pool to clean off!

  13. Great photos! I love the baby in the bright blue Bumbo, looking so colorful amidst nature’s tame hues.

Dirt is just… magical. The smell, its amazing transformation from dirt to mud with the mere presence of water… Sand can’t do that! 🙂

  14. I say what IS it about a little baby in the distance? Yours is in a bumbo – mine was always in the leaves (maybe eating them. A little. Oops.)

  15. If a baby is alone in a Bumbo in the wilderness, does anyone hear him squeal?

Your photos and quotations are always so well-chosen. Hope all is well in your world!
