“If you want to be happy, be.” — Leo Tolstoy

What brings you happiness? In what unexpected places do you find it? And is it really as black and white as Tolstoy makes it out to be?

See more happiness (and other black-and-white emotions) at Beth’s later this week.

  1. I LOVE that quote — in a lot of respects, I do think it’s true. Sometimes, in the right (wrong) circumstances, it’s just not possible to make that choice, you know? I’ve got a post in the works about my own tight clinging to this theory…

Gorgeous photos! My favorite is the colorful flowers. I’m drawn to color these days 🙂

  2. I think it’s every bit as easy as Tolstoy believes it is. Happiness is in belief, not circumstances… x

  3. I love the quote and I love the pictures 🙂

  4. Love the dirty little socks the most. cute 🙂

  5. The leaves on the hand is wonderful.

  6. the dirty little socks look like so much fun! great pics.

  7. Really cute. Did she pick out that outfit in the first picture?

    • Yes! She has quite the, um, eye for fashion. And I do not interfere with genius like that. =>

  8. Oh the hand is fantastic!!

  9. Pretty!!

  10. I love the photos. I’m not sure if Tolstoy himself was able to put that into practice, if you guess based on his books.

  11. Such sweet photos.

  12. Sometimes it’s as simple as a state of mind. A decision. However, I also learned that sometimes, it can be hard work. But always, always possible.

  13. Certainly, thinking isn’t the best path to happiness. But, being, just simple being, hmmm…maybe.

    Lovely pictures.

  14. These are great shots. I love the heart leaves.

  15. The best kind of joy is joy that is found unexpectedly and in unusual places. In my house…dirt brings all kinds of joy. Thank goodness spring is around the corner.

  16. Love the quote and the pics. I think happiness is getting easier as I get older. I’ve learned through experience that just being is a wonderful state of happiness.

  17. Beautiful photos and the perfect illustrations to the perfect quote. As I’ve gotten older, I too am finding happiness in the “smaller” things in life. Like today – warm temperatures and a blue sky. The promise of a soccer game later this evening. A little boy who’s gotten rid of his bug. Peace brings me happiness, and that is usually my family and surroundings. 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend!

  18. Those dirty socks look familiar. Still pondering the Tolstoy. He may be on to something if I could just figure out how to just “be.”

  19. Oh my gosh, I love your perspective! Wonderful photos, you have such talent!! I am so jealous!

  20. Those flowers are NOT fresh, are they? Please tell me you got them at tthe store. I am so jealous of color!!
